Maryland Association of County Health Officers (MACHO) Communications Specialist Position

Position:                             Communications Specialist

Job Reports to:                 MACHO Executive Director

Position Purpose:             Provide communications and public information support to the Maryland Association of County Health Officers and administrative support to the Executive Director and the Association

Work Hours:                      Average 10 hours/week, 12 months a year

Location:                            Work from home office with occasional travel to Baltimore and Annapolis

Pay:                                     Hourly or for total contracted amount; to be negotiated

Responsibilities – Communications and Public Information Support (75%)

  • Create, post and update regular website content
  • Coordinate website content with Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and the Maryland Association of Counties (MACo)
  • Develop and regularly update approved social media content to promote Association efforts
  • Develop infographics and fact sheets on key local health department and public health issues
  • Prepare MACHO communications, conduct and analyze surveys of information from Health Officers and Local Health Departments
  • Participate in the MACHO-LHD PIO Communications Project Workgroup
  • Assist with the archiving of the Association’s historical information
  • Attend meetings and perform other duties as needed

 

Responsibilities – Administrative Support                                               (25%)

  • Provide administrative support to the Executive Director as needed
  • Coordinate Association meeting logistics and take and prepare meeting minutes
  • Serve as support staff to the Executive Director and the Association in writing and developing grant proposals and related materials
  • Assist with the preparation of legislative materials such as written position statements, fiscal notes, testimony, coordination of MACHO positions, monitoring and tracking of bills during the legislative session and attend bill hearings on the Association’s behalf if necessary
  • Attend meetings and perform other duties as needed

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree, focus or concentration in related field (health, policy, communications, etc.)
  • High level proficiency with Microsoft applications: Word, PowerPoint, Excel as well as creating infographics
  • Excellent writing, proofreading and grammar skills
  • Skilled at creating and posting website content and social media content
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to handle a diverse, often fast-paced workload, in an organized and efficient manner
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Ability to produce work that shows a high level of attention to detail
  • Ability to travel in state as needed
  • Ability to work remotely

Preferred

  • Master’s Degree with concentration in Communications, Health Education, Health Policy, Government Affairs, Association Management, or related field is preferred
  • Previous experience in providing administrative support, communications, social media, and/or legislative or policy work
